Capitol Hill Project/RPV Reception

Cap_hill_1_7 Cap_hill_2_3

Before leaving the Republican Party of Virginia to be a chief advisor to the President, Chairman Ed Gillespie left yet another indelible mark on Virginia politics: he kicked off his Capitol Hill Project to a packed room of young, energetic Hill staffers ready to take the Old Dominion by storm.

The Capitol Hill Project is a variation of tried and true campaign tactics the RNC has used for years—harnessing young, politically active staff on Capitol Hill for an infusion of energy and experience in key races across the nation. Deployed volunteer—sent to provide boots on the ground in the final 72-hours or more experienced strategic assistance in the final few weeks—have become a staple of winning GOP campaigns. Now, that same strategy will be applied to local GOP races in Virginia in the off-years.

Appealing to the typically more rationally-focused Hill staffers, Chairman Gillespie and Virginia Congressmen Tom Davis and Thelma Drake, noted that the State Senate elected this year is the one that will redraw district lines following the 2010 census. GOP losses this year could put as many as 4 Republican seats in jeopardy and solidify Democrat strongholds on their existing seats for the next decade.

Next stop for these staffers is July 11th training on Capitol Hill, providing them with the skills to supplement their enthusiasm! Look out, Virginia, the cavalry is on its way.

3 Easy Steps to Building Momentum for Republican Victories in November

The following is an email sent out to the YRFV board from Michelle Presson, YRFV General Counsel. I felt it was a great email and needed to be posted to the blog.  She does a great job outlining why YRs need to be involved in Bill Cleveland's campaign. We have a great opportunity to make a difference.

Check out Bill Cleveland's Facebook! His Facebook is a great way to connect with other volunteers and opportunties to get involved!

Dear Fellow Young Republicans:

I'm writing to urge your assistance in electing a
Republican right inside the belly of the beast (to the
Alexandria City Council) just 3 weeks from now and
building real momentum for our Republican candidates
all across the Commonwealth in November.

There's a special election for City Council in
Alexandria on July 17th.  And, a special election is
always the best opportunity for a win because it comes
down to who is more organized and more dedicated to
winning.  Bill Cleveland -- a 15-year veteran of the
City Council and top vote-getter more than once, an
African American, a veteran, and a retired Capitol
Hill police officer -- is our Republican candidate.

The Democrats went through a bruising fight to produce
their nominee and the tensions within the Democrat
Party are another factor in our favor.  This is
definitely a winnable race.  And, nothing will do more
to deflate the arrogance of the Democrats (who believe
that Republicans barely have a right to even run for
office inside the Capitol Beltway, let alone win) and
to re-energize Republican activists across Virginia
like a win up here.

So, here are the 3 steps that you can take to help as
YRs from all over Virginia:

1)  Bill Cleveland has a fundraiser coming up on July
10th and he could sure use your help raising money.
It's not an expensive event -- $50 to attend or $100
to host (see attached flyer).  Please consider signing
up -- either as an individual or as a club or both --
to be a host for this event.  That money will be used
to reach Republican voters and make sure they vote
either by absentee ballot or in person.  This election
is really about every single vote counting. Download ClevelandHillFundraiser.doc

2)  Whether you can make a contribution yourself or
not, please send the attached flyer around to anyone
you know who might be interested and make a personal
plea for their assistance too.

3)  Come help with the big 72-hour push the weekend of
July 14-15.  I'm sure the good Republicans of the
Alexandria City Committee will put people up and take
good care of you if you can come help out!  If you're
available, contact Chris Marston (Alexandria City
Committee Chairman and another YR!) at
chris.marston@gmail.com or 703-627-4679.

I really appreciate your consideration of this easy
3-step plan to a landmark victory in Alexandria and I
hope that you'll be able to help out.  I'm happy to
talk to you about this if you'd like too!

Thanks,
Michelle Presson

Michael Steele at the Americans for Prosperity lunch

Some more photos from Richmond...

Michael Steele was the guest speaker at an Americans for Prosperity lunch, where he spoke about his mother's history as a low-wage-earner, and the importance of economic growth and prosperity from the perspective of the son of a working class, African-American woman-- just a little different from the perspective we all too often hear in the GOP, which enables liberals to dismiss us all as Born-With-A-Silver-Spoon-In-Our-Mouths elitists!

Check out some pictures!
