This year, Virginia plays host to another round of contentious elections, with Republican control of the state legislature at risk. Why does retaining control of the legislature matter so much to Young Republicans? In short, not just because who controls the legislature dictates a lot about our lifestyle, levels of taxation, and economy here in the Old Dominion, but also because the state legislature controls congressional redistricting. If Democrats take over, it's very likely that we will see redistricting occur on lines that would hand several extra congressional seats to Democrats.
If you're reading this blog, I probably don't need to tell you that a lot of Virginian young professionals-- and not just YRs-- are less than enthusiastic about Democratic tax-hiking schemes that we've seen both in the state and at the federal level. We're concerned about congressional Democrats devoting so much time to vote after vote on the war, rather than focusing on a broad array of other problems that our state, and the nation, as a whole, faces.
So, to prevent Democrats from making further gains, purely by redistricting, the Virginia YRs are taking action. We're asking volunteers from across the country to DO IT IN VIRGINIA!-- i.e., come to the state in the weeks before the election, and help us keep our majority in the state legislature.
Last month, the YRFV held a fundraiser to bring in cash to cover the costs of volunteers devoting a weekend to helping us keep the state legislature. We've raised over $9,000 so far to help fund this exciting initiative-- and the checks keep flowing in! Here are some pictures from the fundraiser, and an indication of who has been helping us fund this important effort, thus far:
